Christmas Parade

On Saturday, December 6th the Carnegie Library of Homestead
participated in the Steel Valley Holiday Parade!

It was the first snow of the year, how perfect for a Holiday Parade!

We enjoyed waving to all the people, and handing out Curious George Visits the Library
to the about 150 youngsters!
A special thanks to our Board President, Dan Lloyd for creating the float and
donating to the event!
Abby, Amanda, Heather, Emily, Rachel and Victoria were also
on hand to wave and walk with the float.

Meet Our New Sister Library

Meet Our New Sister Library!

Chornomors’k Central Public Library

We at The Carnegie Library of Homestead are excited to announce our sister library, Chornomors’k Library. The town of Chornomors’k is located along the Black Sea on the
Crimea Peninsula in the Ukraine.

Join us as we venture to deepen cultural relations between our two libraries and the communities they serve!

Local History Museum in Chornomors’k
Local History
The area where the town is located has a rich history. The ruins of Ancient Greek colonies
reflect how life was here many centuries ago. All of the ruins are united under the National Historical-Archaeological Park “Kalos-Limen”. This park attracts many tourists who would like
to learn more about the life and culture of the ancient Greeks in the colonies. Visitors can do
this through tours which explore the architecture, traditions and rituals of the people who once
lived there. During archaeological digs scientists have discovered about six thousand artifacts which are now on display in the Local History Museum.

New Computer Classes Starting!

The library will be offering another 8-week session of Basic Computer Skills classes. This is a great opportunity to get acquainted with:
  • The parts of a computer
  • Email and the Internet
  • Typing and Microsoft Word
and more....
These classes are gearned towards learners with very little or no computer experience. They are taught at a relaxed pace and questions are encouraged!
I know that it sometimes seems overwhelming to be stuck in a world that is so dependent on technology, but it is really not all that bad once you start to learn. Then it does not seem nearly as scary, and becomes much more fun!
The classes meet every Wednesday at the library for 8 weeks, starting December 2nd. There are two times to choose from, either 10:30-11:30 or 11:30-12:30. If you would like to sign up, please call 412-462-3444.
We hope to see you there!

Children's Room is looking very different!

The Children's Room renovation began on July 6th!
We had some great volunteers help us take down the old shelving and carry it to the dumpster. I would like to thank Matt , Chris, Ken, Chuck, Heather, Mary Jo, Paula and the many others who helped us on demo day!
Time for the fun part, the pictures!

The Children's Room before demolition. The room looked very odd without books!

Here is Paula, cleaning our beautiful murals. The murals
now hang throughout the building.

Shelves are down!

Children's Room Renovations

CLoH is in the planning stage of the renovation of the Children's Room. This project also involves relocating the Circulation Desk, Teen Space and Adult Computers.

The grants for this project have been provided by the Allegheny Foundation and Janney Investments. The project will start this July and we hope to have it completed by September.

Some exciting new elements of the renovations are:

A stage area for toddler storytimes, puppet shows and plays.

A family seating area for a more comfortable storytime between parent and child.

More computers.

An area for a caregiver and toddler to be side by side. This area will allow the adult to use the computer and the toddler to explore the new space, while still being monitored by the adult.

A wonderful, colorful mural created by a Pittsburgh area artist.

New bookshelves.

What would you like to see improved in the Children's Room?
